What is the RAG Engine?

The RAG Engine is the content gap finder in AEO Ultimate. AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews don’t read your pages top to bottom. They cut the web into short passages, pull back the few that best match a question, and write their answer from those. That process is called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG. If no passage on your site answers the question, you are not in the answer, however good the rest of the page is.

Most businesses already have those answers. They sit in spec sheets, owner’s manuals, installation guides, safety data sheets, price lists and FAQs that never made it onto the website. The RAG Engine reads those documents, matches them against the searches you already rank for and the AI questions you were left out of, and shows you exactly which answer is missing from which page.

The content optimization workflow

1. Upload your documents. PDFs, Word files and text. They are read on your own server, split into passages and the file is deleted; only the searchable passages are kept. Tables in PDFs are rebuilt as real tables.
2. See the gaps in your search rankings. Search Placement lists the Google and Bing searches where you rank 4th to 15th, that one of your documents answers, and that the ranking page does not. These are content gaps taken from your own Search Console and Bing Webmaster data, not estimated. Searches you still rank for whose page is now in the Trash or unpublished are flagged, with a one-click restore.
3. See the gaps in AI answers. AI Citations lists the questions from your AI Visibility checks where any of eight AI engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Le Chat, Muse or DeepSeek) left you out, beside the passages from your documents that answer them.
4. See what buyers ask next. Next questions takes the follow-up questions the engines predicted after each answer and checks them against your pages and documents: the passage to publish where your documents answer one, and a list of what nothing on your site answers yet. Questions about your business itself (turnaround, warranty, shipping, rush service, reviews) are grouped by topic with the page that should answer them, or a note that you have none yet.
5. Copy the answer onto the right page. Every suggestion names the page it belongs on and has two buttons: Copy, and Edit page. Paste the passage, edit it into your own words, and publish when you are happy with it.
6. Check that it worked. Chunk View shows the page the way a retrieval index holds it, so you can confirm the new answer stands on its own as a passage. The next AI Visibility check shows whether the engines now cite you.

The five tabs

• Overview: what is set up (documents, pages, Search Console, Bing, AI Visibility) and what is not, with a link to fix each one.
• Documents: upload, label and search your documents. Large files upload in pieces and resume if the connection drops.
• Chunk View: any page split into the passages a retrieval index would hold, with the passages that make no sense on their own flagged.
• Search Placement: content gaps from Google and Bing, with the page to add each answer to.
• AI Citations: content gaps from AI answers, read from the AI Visibility checks you have already run, plus the Next questions the engines expect your buyers to ask after them.

Built for the documents businesses actually have

• Manufacturers, dealers and parts suppliers: spec sheets and brochures, matched by exact model number (ES989 is not ES9891).
• HVAC, electrical and appliance businesses: owner’s manuals, error codes and installation guides, the “how do I” searches customers type before they call.
• WooCommerce stores: assembly guides and product manuals that answer pre-sale questions.
• Construction, real estate and regulated trades: building codes, statutes and safety data sheets. These are quoted word for word with their citation, never paraphrased, and laws and codes are checked online for changes since your copy’s date.

Questions

Does the RAG Engine write or publish content for me?

No. It finds the gap and hands you the passage from your own document, with a Copy button and an Edit page link. You decide what goes on the page and how it reads. Nothing is ever inserted into a post automatically.

Do my documents leave my server?

Not for reading, splitting or searching: that all happens on your own server, and the uploaded file is deleted once it has been read. Two optional features use an AI provider with your own API key, and only when you switch them on: AI document labels, which send the first part of a document (after you tick a consent box) so the AI can say what kind of document it is, and the law check, which sends the citation, place, date and section headings but never the document text.

Does it give my pages a content score?

No. It shows specific gaps: this search, this answer, this page. For measuring AI results, AI Visibility reports whether each engine cited you, named you without a link, or left you out, and who it cited instead.

What do I need to set up first?

Switch on the RAG Engine under Modules. Documents and Chunk View work straight away. Search Placement needs Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools connected in the Command Center, and AI Citations needs at least one AI Visibility check. The Overview tab tells you which of these are missing and links to where to fix each one.

Is it really free?

Yes. The RAG Engine is part of the free AEO Ultimate plugin on WordPress.org. There is no paid tier. The optional AI features run on your own key, so you pay the provider directly for what you use.
